ODU AMC® High-Density as a solution

As a counterpart to the standard interface, ODU offers their AMC® High-Density miniature circular connectors – space saving and powerful for power and data rates.

High contact density allows for high currents in a small space, making them ideal for mobile military systems. The robust design was developed for connection under extreme conditions and can withstand even strong vibrations, moisture, dust and considerable temperature fluctuations from -40° C to +85° C.

With IP68 / IP6K9K, the system is also permanently protected against the ingress of water, even during high-pressure cleaning or submersion. Furthermore, the seamless EMC shielding ensures reliable signal transmission even with high electromagnetic interference.

A break-away function enables quick disconnection in an emergency – alternatively, an additional screw-lock function ensures robust permanently fixed positions.

But that is not the end of the USB saga

Military equipment is undergoing a huge transformation, with a proliferation of small COTS devices, often connected/charged via a standard USB-C socket.

Introducing the New Single-Row 1.27mm Kontrol Connectors and Cable Assemblies

Harwin and Genalog are very excited to announce an expansion of our Kontrol range of industrial board-to-board interconnects (BBi). By adding single row connectors and cables to the 1.27mm pitch (0.05") connectors. The range has been created to bridge the gap between high-end connectors and established pin header and socket solutions.

The launch adds to their existing dual-row Kontrol connectors, extending the range with 49 new products. These are now 21 SMT connectors and 28 double-ended cable assemblies that include pin-count options of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12.

SMT Connectors

All new SMT connectors in the series are available in vertical (male only) or horizontal (male and female) mounting options. They are manufactured to include full shrouding and recessed contacts incorporated to prevent damage to the pins.

Additionally, to improve assembly, the connectors have been polarized to prevent mis-mating. They also feature a tolerance to misalignment, with a permissible linear misalignment of up to 0.075mm and an allowable misalignment angle of 4.3o.

The latched design enables tool-free mating and unmating, while surface mount tabs have been implemented to improve the retention force holding the connectors to the PCB. Location pegs have also been incorporated to assist with correct board placement and inhibit movement while soldering.

Double-Ended Cable Assemblies

The new Kontrol male and female double-ended cable assemblies include in-line connectors and UL-Specification 26 AWG ribbon cable, with an option of 150mm and 300mm options available.

Like the SMT connectors, full shrouding, latches and polarization have been implemented to protect contacts and improve secure and blind mating.

Technical Specifications and Availability

These new single row products meet the same high electrical and reliability specifications as the existing Kontrol line-up showcasing a current rating of 1.2A per contact, and a 25mΩ contact resistance.

The connectors are qualified up to 500 mating operations. These were operated across a 170oC temperature range (-55 to +125oC, board-to-board / -20 to 105oC cable-to-board and cable-to-cable) and have been tested to withstand vibration forces of 20 G for up to 12 hours.

All connectors are available in tape and reel packaging for automated assembly processes, with disposable pick-and-place caps included where needed.

John Feaster, Harwin’s BBi product manager said: “Industrial and embedded applications are needing to operate under ever more stringent conditions, deployed with tighter constraints on space and in harsher environments.

Optronics form an integral part of today’s operational military equipment, playing a decisive role in the tactical superiority and safety of armed forces. From night vision technology and thermal imaging to enhanced head-up displays (HUDs) and augmented reality glasses, these optoelectronic systems are now indispensable tools.

However, the use of such highly sophisticated optronics in extreme environments and the high sensitivity of such systems, present manufacturers with special challenges.

In particular, the interfaces and connections of the optronics are a potential weak point.

These connectivity challenges are detailed below.

1. Break resistance: The connection systems have to withstand enormous tensile and
torsional forces, which can lead to bent or broken contacts. Conventional push-pull mechanisms increase the leverage on the connection, due to their design.

Therefore, to meet the requirements of highly innovative optronics, ODU has developed best-in-class ODU-AMC® connectors that are many times more robust than conventional half-shell coded systems. They offer reliable protection against twisting and breakage, enabling the transmission of various data protocols for imaging applications such as HDMI.

2. Environmental protection: For a solution that can be used as flexibly as possible, the interfaces and connections of the optronics must be able to withstand extreme levels of dust, water and shock - ODU connectors meet the highest environmental standards. With an immersion depth of up to 20 metres and protection classes IP6K8 and IP6K9K. This makes them ideally suited for use in harsh environments without reducing the performance of the optronics

3. Hermetic sealing: Optronics are often filled with inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, to eliminate an oxygen-containing atmosphere. Vacuum‐tight connector systems with glass potting technology for extremely high pressures are available from ODU.

4. The smallest foot-print: Naturally, all of the above have to be achieved, together with the ability to lock securely, in the most confined spaces – The ODU-AMC® connectors are designed specifically for this situation.

Amokabel Flexishield Ltd

In Mansfield, Amokabel manufacture cables that are designed to be concealed in walls and building spaces less than 50mm deep.

Its main feature is the safety mechanism that activates upon penetration by sharp metal objects, causing the cable to safely break at 200 amperes under such conditions. This allows for the activation of an MCB up to 40A type B or up to 20A type C, exceeding BS8436 requirements. The cable uses a bonded aluminium tape for excellent mechanical resistance and effective reduction of electrical interference.
